A paper on the synthesis of the new compound BiSF under high pressure has been accepted for publication in Chem. Mater. The lone pair electrons of Bi are “hidden” at the synthesis pressure (5 GPa), but when the pressure is reduced, they “reveal themselves” and distort the crystal structure. This study demonstrated that isolated electron pairs can be manipulated by pressure.
